Common Airbnb Cleaning Mistakes That Cost Hosts Five-Star Reviews

When a host comes to us after a rough patch of reviews, we usually know what we will find before we walk in. Not because the property is bad or the host does not care. Almost every slipping short-stay property on the Gold Coast is slipping for the same handful of reasons, and none of them are about effort. They are about approach.
We have reset a lot of these properties, from apartments in Broadbeach to holiday homes in Palm Beach, and the pattern is consistent enough that we built our whole turnover system around preventing it. Here are the mistakes we see most, what each one looks like when it lands in a review, and how we make sure it never happens on a property we look after.
Mistake 1: Treating a Turnover Like a Home Clean
A home clean and a turnover are different jobs with different goals. A home clean maintains a space for people who live in it. A turnover prepares a space for a stranger who is judging it against every hotel and holiday rental they have ever stayed in, from the moment the door opens.
When a turnover is done like a home clean, the property ends up tidy but not ready. In the review, it reads as “clean enough, but it didn’t feel special” and a quiet four stars. Our turnovers are built for the guest experience specifically. Every visit works towards one outcome, a property that feels like nobody has ever stayed there before.
Mistake 2: No Documented Standard
If the clean lives in someone’s head, the quality depends entirely on whose head turns up that day. This is the single biggest cause of the review pattern that confuses hosts most, glowing five stars one month and a flat three the next, with nothing about the property changed except who cleaned it.
Guests forgive very little inconsistency, because each guest only ever experiences your property once. That is why every turnover we complete runs on documented checklists, so the finish is the same whether it is our first visit to your property or our fiftieth. The standard belongs to the system, not to whoever is rostered on.
Mistake 3: Cutting Corners on Linen
Nothing sinks a review faster than bedding. A stained pillowcase, a sheet that smells of the cupboard it sat in, a doona cover thrown on in a hurry. Guests will forgive a dusty skirting board long before they forgive a bed they did not want to get into, and they mention linen in reviews with brutal regularity.
We treat linen as a core part of the turnover, not a task tacked on the end. Beds are stripped and remade to the same finish every time, damaged or tired items are pulled and flagged rather than reused, and stock levels are monitored so a shortage never forces a shortcut. Crisp, the right way finished beds are one of the strongest quality signals a short-stay property can send, and we refuse to gamble with them.
Mistake 4: Skipping the Presentation Reset
A property can be genuinely clean and still feel wrong. Cushions where the last guest left them, chairs at odd angles, a kettle full of someone else’s water. Guests cannot always articulate it, but the review says it for them. “It felt like walking into someone else’s house.”
Every turnover we do finishes with a full presentation reset. Furniture straightened, beds styled, towels folded, glass polished and every trace of the previous stay removed. The clean makes the property hygienic. The reset is what makes it feel like a holiday, and it is the part guests actually remember at review time.
Mistake 5: No Damage Reporting
When damage goes unreported, the next guest becomes the inspection. They arrive to find the broken blind or the wobbly bed frame, they spend their stay mildly annoyed by it, and then they write about it. The host is blindsided twice, once by the damage and once by the review, and by then the window for a claim against the guest who caused it has usually closed.
Reporting is built into every turnover we complete. If we find damage, you get photos and a clear description the same day, and if something is wearing out we flag it before it fails. On a short-stay property, a cleaner who says nothing is not saving you hassle. They are storing it up for you.
Mistake 6: Booking the Clean on Price Alone
We will be straight about this one. The cheapest turnover on the coast gets to that price because something has been squeezed, and it is usually time. A clean priced to the bone has to move fast and skip detail, and the detail is precisely what five-star reviews are made of. The saving on each clean is real, but so is the cost, paid slowly, in ratings.
That is why we quote on the outcome rather than racing to the lowest number. If you’re looking for the cheapest option available, we may not be the right fit. If you want a property that earns its reviews every single stay, that is exactly the work we built this company to do.
Every Mistake on This List Is Preventable
None of these mistakes come from laziness. They come from treating turnover cleaning as a commodity when it is actually the guest experience itself. Systems, linen discipline, presentation, reporting and honest pricing prevent every single one, and that is precisely what we bring to every short-stay property we look after between Coolangatta and Nerang.

Questions We Hear Every Week
What is the most common Airbnb cleaning mistake?
Treating a turnover like a normal home clean. A turnover prepares a property for a guest who is judging it against hotels, which means presentation, linen and consistency matter as much as the cleaning itself.
Why are my Airbnb reviews inconsistent?
Inconsistent reviews usually mean the cleaning standard changes depending on who does it. A documented checklist system keeps every turnover to the same finish, whoever completes it.
How does cleaning affect Airbnb reviews?
Cleanliness is rated on its own in Airbnb reviews and shapes the overall rating. Linen quality, presentation and consistency are the details guests mention most, positive and negative.
Do you charge hourly for Airbnb cleaning?
No. Every turnover is quoted on the outcome, with a clear agreed price for the standard delivered, so quality is never squeezed to fit a clock.
What should a proper Airbnb turnover include?
Cleaning of all rooms, fresh linen and beds made to a consistent finish, rubbish removal, restocking checks, a full presentation reset and prompt reporting of any damage or issues found.
